The Folded Face-Cloth in the Grave of Messiah Yeshua by Sandy Bruce

I had posted in the past about the dinner napkin which is a Christian version but here is the real story.

The FOLDED FACE-CLOTH in the GRAVE of Messiah Yeshua (John 20:1-9)

The FOLDED FACE-CLOTH in the GRAVE of Messiah Yeshua (John 20:1-9)

1 Now on the ( tē  τῇ ) FIRST{ day } ( bah-rih-shohn בָּרִאשׁוֹן ; barishon | Grk: mia  μία )
of the ( tōn
 τῶν ) { week } SHABBAT (Heb: bah-Shabbat בַּשַּׁבָּת ) | Grk: sabbatōn  σαββάτων);
Miriam ( Miryam מִרְיָם ) Magdalene ( Heb: ha-Mahg-dah-leet הַמַּגְדָּלִית | Grk: Magdalēnē  Μαγδαληνὴ ) went to the TOMB ( ha-keh-vehr הַקֶּבֶר ; grave ) early, while it was still dark, and saw that the STONE ( eh-ven אֶבֶן ) had been taken away from the tomb.

-------

{ DAY – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators }

{ WEEK – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators;
what it says is: sabbatōn
  σαββάτων, which does NOT mean: “WEEK”,
but simply transliterates the Hebrew: “Shabbaton”
שַׁבָּתוֹן , thus clearly referring to Shabbat שַּׁבָּת }

[ In Hebrew, the counting of the days of the WEEK ( shah-voo-ah שָּׁבוּעַ ; shavuah ) is FROM one Shabbat שַּׁבָּת TO the next Shabbat שַּׁבָּת. Thus, Day One is One ( 1 ) from the { last } Shabbat; Day Two is Two ( 2 ) from the { last } Shabbat; Day Three is Three ( 3 )  from the { last } Shabbat, etc.

Thus the Hebrew of this verse would show:
SHABBAT ( Heb: bah-Shabbat
בַּשַּׁבָּת ) | Grk: sabbatōn  σαββάτων );

The Greek of this verse therefore correctly shows: sabbatōn  σαββάτων , which is a made-up Greek word used to transliterate the Hebrew word: Shabbaton
שַׁבָּתוֹן ( see Lev 23:3 where is it translated as “solemn rest” ), which comes from the Hebrew word: Shabbat שַּׁבָּת - our Creator’s Set Apart Seventh Day.

MIRIAM ( Miryam
מִרְיָם ) Magdalene ( Heb: ha-Mahg-dah-leet הַמַּגְדָּלִית | Grk: Magdalēnē  Μαγδαληνὴ ); who was from the City of Magdala, which was  located on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee, not far from the city of Capernaum ( Keh-fahr  Nah-choom כְפַר נַחוּם ; City of Nahum / City of Comfort ).

Magdalene ( ha-Mahg-dah-leet הַמַּגְדָּלִית ) - from the Hebrew word for “TOWER” ( mig-dahl מִגְדַּל )

CAPERNAUM ( Keh-fahr Nah-choom כְפַר נַחוּם ) meaning:
City of Nahum or City of Comfort

COMFORT ( nah-chahm נַחֲם )
Hebrew Letters: Mem
ם final / soffit – Chet ח  – Nun נּ

The word “COMFORT” ( nah-chahm נַחֲם ) is also the ROOT for the following words and names:

NAHUM ( Nah-choom
נַחוּם ), name of the Hebrew Prophet Nahum, meaning: Comfort
Hebrew Letters: Mem
םfinal / soffit – VAV ( וּ ) – Chet ח  – Nun נּ

NEHEMIAH ( Neh-chem-Yah
נְחֶמְיָה ), name of the Hebrew Prophet NEHEMIAH,
meaning: Comfort of Yah
יָה ( YHWH יְהוָה )
Hebrew Letters: HEY ה – YOD י – Mem מ  – Chet ח  – Nun נּ

It is for this reason: “COMFORT”( nah-chahm נַחֲם ), that LAMECH( Leh-mech לֶמֶךְ ; Lemech), the son of Methuselah, named his son NOAH ( Noh-ahch נֹחַ ; Noach ), saying:

And he called his name NOAH ( Noh-ahch
נֹחַ ; Noach ), saying, “This one “WILL COMFORT US ( yeh-nah-chah-may-noo יְנַחֲמֵנוּ ) concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which YHWH יְהוָה has cursed (Gen 5:29)

TOMB ( ha-keh-vehr הַקֶּבֶר ; grave )
Hebrew Letters: Raish ר – Bet ב – Kof קּ – Hey ה

These same four letters in reverse spell the name: REBEKAH ( Rivkah רִבְקָה ) ;
Hebrew Letters: – Hey ה – Kof קּ – Bet ב – Raish ר
revealing that there is a beautiful mystery in her name, which is hidden in Genesis 24

-------

“Now on the FIRST of the SHABBAT שַּׁבָּת “ - Messiah did NOT resurrect on “Sunday” or “Sunday morning”, but rather, at the end of the SHABBAT שַּׁבָּת , the night before, thus completing three full days and three full nights, exactly 72 hours, as He had said. Thus, Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ had already risen from the dead approximately twelve ( 12 ) hours by the time that the women came to the grave in the early morning hours of Day One after the SHABBAT שַּׁבָּת.

-------

2 Then she ran { back } and came to Simon ( Shih-mohn שִׁמְעוֹן ; Shimon ) Peter ( Kay-fah כֵּיפָא ; Kefa ), and to the other DISCIPLE (tahl-meed תַּלְמִיד ; talmid ; taught one ), whom Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ loved, and said to them, “They { the Romans ? } have taken away the MASTER ( Ah-dohn אָדוֹן ; Adon ) out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple { John ( Yochanan יוֹחָנָן ) }, and were going to the tomb.

4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.

[ this may have been the first race ever in the Messianic Maccabees games ! }

5 And he { John (Yochanan יוֹחָנָן ) }, stooping down and looking in, saw the LINEN CLOTHS ( tahch-ree-cheem תַּכְרִיכִים ) lying there; yet he did not go in.

6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the LINEN CLOTHS lying there,

NOT lying with the LINEN CLOTHS ( othoniōn

FOLDED TOGETHER ( Heb: mih-koo-peh-let

HEAD, not lying with the LINEN WRAPPINGS, but FOLDED UP in a place by itself.

CJB
also the CLOTH that had been around his
HEAD, lying not with the SHEETS but in a separate place and still FOLDED UP.

-------

8 Then the other { John( Yochanan יוֹחָנָן ) } DISCIPLE ( tahl-meed תַּלְמִיד ; talmid ; taught one ), who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he SAW and BELIEVED.

9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. (John 20:1-9)

-------

The other DISCIPLE (tahl-meed תַּלְמִיד ; talmid ;taught one ) here is John ( Yochanan יוֹחָנָן ), who outran Simon Peter ( Shimon Kefa  כֵּיפָא שִׁמְעוֹן ) in coming to the grave. He looked in and saw that the BODY of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ was NOT there. He looked in, but did not yet go in. Shimon Kefa then arrived and went in. After that, John also went in, SAW and BELIEVED – in the resurrection of Messiah.

-------

The Scriptures specifically tell us that they both saw that the NAPKIN / HANDKERCHIEF / FACE-CLOTH, which had been on the HEAD of Yeshua
יֵשׁוּעַ , was NOT lying with the LINEN CLOTHS that had been wrapped around His BODY. Instead, it was FOLDED UP in a separate place by itself.

-------

WHAT is so significant about what he saw?

What exactly was the NAPKIN / HANDKERCHIEF / FACE-CLOTH ?

After Peter went into the tomb, why did John ( Yochanan
יוֹחָנָן ) then go in, SEE and { also } BELIEVE, that Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ had indeed risen from the dead?

The answers to these questions are found in understanding the Hebrew culture, both then and now.

When a Hebrew / Jewish man is buried, he is wrapped in the PRAYER SHAWL / TALLIT טַלִּית that he used { during his life } for praying. His entire BODY is wrapped in it, including the HEAD.

43 Now when He { Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ } had said these things, He cried with a loud voice,
“Lazarus ( ELazar
אֶלְעָזָר ; ELohim helps ), come forth!”

[ by the way, it is believed, that if Yeshua
יֵשׁוּעַ had not specifically called Lazarus (ELazar אֶלְעָזָר ) by name, all the dead there in that place may have come forth! ]

44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with
GRAVE-CLOTHES ( Heb: tahch-ree-cheem תַּכְרִיכִים ; linen cloths; linen strips | Grk: keiriais  κειρίαις ),

And his FACE ( oo-pah-nahyv וּפָנָיו | Grk: opsis  ὄψις )
was WRAPPED ( Heb: ah-too-poht
עֲטוּפוֹת | Grk: periededeto  περιεδέδετο )

with a CLOTH ( Heb: beh-mit-pah-chaht
בְּמִטְפַּחַת | Grk: soudariō  σουδαρίῳ ; face-cloth, napkin ).

Yeshua
יֵשׁוּעַ said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.” (John 11:43-44)

WHAT was the FACE { HEAD } of Lazarus ( ELazarאֶלְעָזָר ) wrapped in?
Answer: his Prayer Shawl / Tallit
טַלִּית.

So WHAT was the FACE { HEAD } of Yeshua
יֵשׁוּעַ WRAPPED in, when He was buried?Answer: his Prayer Shawl / Tallitטַלִּית.

-------

So the NAPKIN / HANDKERCHIEF / FACE-CLOTH was really the Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ ! Can we see what a huge difference it makes, to learn and understand the Hebrew culture and way of life, in order to better, properly and correctly understand the Scriptures?

-------

So WHY then was the PrayerShawl / Tallit טַלִּית of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ FOLDED UP in a separate place apart from the LINEN CLOTHS / LINEN CLOTHES / LINEN WRAPPINGS / GRAVE-CLOTHES that had been wrapped on His BODY?

The answer to this important question is this:

When a Hebrew / Jewish man finishes praying, he FOLDS UP his Prayer Shawl /Tallit
טַלִּית . Often, each man likes to FOLD it UP in a particular way.

The Hebrew Sent Ones ( Heb: sheh-lee-cheem שְּׁלִיחִים |Grk: apostoloi ἀπόστολοι ; apostles ) had been with Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ for 3-1/2 years. Certainly they had been to the synagogues together, as well as to the TEMPLE ( Bayt ha-Mikdash בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ  ) together for all of the Appointed Times (moh-ah-deem מּוֹעֲדִים ; moadim ;“feasts” ). Surely, they had seen, repeatedly, just exactly HOW Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ FOLDED UP His own PrayerShawl / Tallit טַלִּית each time.

I am sure that He specifically made sure that they SAW Him FOLDING UP His Prayer Shawl / Tallit
טַלִּית during those 3-1/2 years. Why? It is because He was preparing them for this: a SIGN - PROOF of His RESURRECTION!

He had told them of His RESURRECTION beforehand, but they did NOT yet understand or believe. The Scripture here even tells us:

“For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.”
(John 20:9)

For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You allow
Your { Holy One / Set Apart One } [ RIGHTEOUS ONE ( chah-seed-chah חֲסִידְךָ ) ]
to see corruption. (Psa 16:10)

כִּי לֹא-תַעֲזֹב נַפְשִׁי לִשְׁאוֹל  לֹא-תִתֵּן חֲסִידְךָ לִרְאוֹת שָׁחַת

But NOW, after SEEING the Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ FOLDED UP just like He always FOLDED it UP during His 3-1/2 years of ministry with them, Simon Peter ( Shimon Kefa  כֵּיפָא שִׁמְעוֹן ) and John ( Yochanan יוֹחָנָן ) both BELIEVED that He had indeed been raised from the dead!

-------

IF ROMAN soldiers had taken away the BODY of Yeshua
יֵשׁוּעַ , they would NOT have FOLDED UP
His Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית ; nor would they have cared to do so; nor would they have known HOW He FOLDED it UP during His ministry. They might have either taken the Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית and thrown it out, or cast lots for it, or just left it there – CRUMPLED UP ( see photo below ).

The Jews, and especially the chief priests and scribes, were NOT even going to go to the grave at this time, because it was the Feast of UnLeavened Bread and then First Fruits. They also knew that the tomb / grave had been securely sealedby the Romans, with two large spikes holding the stone over the mouth of the tomb / grave -- plus it was being guarded by Roman soldiers.

But it was NOT the will of
YHWH יְהוָה ELohim אֱלֹהִים that the Romans or any of the chief priests and scribes should have the Prayer Shawl /Tallit טַלִּית of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ the Messiah. It was needed for His Hebrew Sent Ones.

Thus, the ONLY ONE,  who WOULD have, and who COULD have, FOLDED UP the Prayer Shawl / Tallit
טַלִּית of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ exactly as He had FOLDED it UP during His ministry, was Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ Himself. Thus, this one verse ( John 20:7) provides us with an extremely important detail on the PROOF of the resurrection of Messiah.

And Simon Peter ( Shimon Kefa  כֵּיפָא שִׁמְעוֹן ) and John ( Yochanan יוֹחָנָן ) become the { first } Two Witnesses ofthe resurrection, as required by TORAH תּוֹרָה , in order to establish something as fact.

So now we also learn that even in the style / format of the writing the ReNewed Covenant writings, they follow the SPIRITUAL PRINCIPLES and SPIRITUAL TRUTHS contained within the commandments of the TORAH תּוֹרָה .

-------

But the FOLDED UP
Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ also teaches us ANOTHER IMPORTANT spiritual Truth. And that is ... He is going to PUT IT BACK ON AGAIN!

It is therefore my belief that when Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ returns from heaven, to redeem physical IsraELand set up His kingdom on earth, He will be wearing THAT Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית !!

His Kingdom on earth will be ruled according to the COMMANDMENTS of His TORAH תּוֹרָה, as it has ALWAYS BEEN. Thus, we need to be LEARNING and OBEYING His COMMANDMENTS now, if we want to be IN His Kingdom!!

>>>>>>>>>>>>

By the way, if the "LAW" ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) was allegedly "done away with" or allegedly "nailed to the Tree / cross, by the DEATH of Messiah, WHY would He have His FACE WRAPPED in His Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית that had the FRINGES / TASSELS ( Tzitzit צִיצִת ) on their FOUR ( 4 ) CORNERS, which represents all 613 COMMANDMENTS of the "LAW" ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) ???

Part of the Answer is this: NOT ALL of the prophecies and things, written in the "LAW" ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) and the Hebrew Prophets have yet been fulfilled. Therefore the "LAW" ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) and the Hebrew Prophets still stand and are still valid and required for all ages, so we MUST start LEARNING and OBEYING the COMMANDMENTS. ( see Matt 5:17-19 )

Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית NOT folded, but crumpled up
Prayer Shawl / Tallit טַלִּית NOT folded, but crumpled up

Here was a question posted in the comments on Facebook that I find can really clear up some misunderstandings.  Please read on!

1. How does covering yourself with a Tallit when you pray mesh with our understanding of 2 verses in 1 Cor 11:

vs 4. Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, brings shame to his Head.

and vs 7 For a man indeed should not cover his head, since he is the likeness and esteem of Elohim, but woman is the esteem of man.

2. I have heard it said that Paul was a Tallit maker instead of a tent maker, what's your take on this? Is there evidence in the original language to suggest or support this?

3. Was the sheet that Peter saw in his vision with the animals a Tallit? Is there evidence in the original language to support or suggest this?

4. When I see people using the Tallit to wrap around their families to pray, is this the same imagery as in the Psalms when scripture uses wings?

5. And finally, would you mind referencing the verse where the Messiah talks about the Tallit Kattan? You had mentioned this in the original status and I wanted to check it out!

Sandy Bruce answers:

Let’s read the entire passage IN CONTEXT

1 IMMITATE [ IMITATORS ( mimētai μιμηταί ) ] me [ of me ( mou μου ) ],

Comment: IMMITATE – some English translations show this as a VERB, when the Greek shows it as a NOUN: IMITATORS ( mimētai μιμηταί )

[ BE ( ginesthe γίνεσθε ) ]

Comment: BE – not shown in the English translations where they show IMMITATE as a VERB instead of as a NOUN as it should be.

just as I also { imitate } [ of ] Messiah.

Comment: { imitate } – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators;
It would be understood in Hebrew thought based on the structure and intent of the sentence.

-------

2 Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and KEEP ( katechete κατέχετε ; hold firmly; hold fast ) THE ( tas τὰς ) TRADITIONS ( paradoseis παραδόσεις ) just as I delivered them to you.

Comment – what traditions is Sha’ul ( Saul – Paul ) talking about here? Obviously they are NOT, and can NOT be, worldly traditions of the Greeks, Romans or other pagan groups. Obviously, they are NOT, and can NOT be, religious traditions of the RELIGIOUS groups of Jews that taught MAN-MADE doctrines being equal to or above “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ).

Moreover, the use of the definite article: THE ( tas τὰς ) here, clearly teaches that there were specific biblically-based ( Hebrew / Hebraic “Jewish” ) TRADITIONS ( paradoseis παραδόσεις ) which he had taught and explained to the assembly to do, and they were KEEPING and DOING them.

YHWH יְהוָה ELohim אֱלֹהִים is not against *** ALL *** traditions. He is only against those TRADITIONS which either: ADD to, SUBTRACT from, or SUBSTITUTE for / are INSTEAD of, any of the commandments of the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) { see Deut 4:2 and 12:32 }.

Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ Himself KEPT and DID various biblically-based ( Hebrew / Hebraic “Jewish” ) TRADITIONS. We read this throughout the ReNewed Covenant writings. In fact, it is not only helpful, but sometimes very important, to learn and understand those particular TRADITIONS, in order to properly, correctly or fully understand a passage of Scripture. The issue of the “NAPKIN” / FACE-CLOTH / HANDKERCHIEF that was wrapped around the HEAD of Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ in His burial is just one example.

-------

3 But I want you to know that

THE ( hē ἡ ) HEAD ( kephalē κεφαλῇ ) of EVERY ( pantos Παντὸς ) MAN ( andros ἀνδρὸς ) is [ THE ( ho ὁ ) ] Messiah ( Mashiach מָשִׁיחַ ),

Comment: MAN ( andros ἀνδρὸς ) - also translated as: HUSBAND

Comment: the use of the definite article: [ THE ( ho ὁ ) ] Messiah - the word “THE” does not show in the English, although it is in the Greek text. It is there by necessity to teach that the HEAD of every MAN is NOT just *** ANY *** Messiah – “redeemer” / “anointed one”, but rather, the One, True Hebrew Messiah Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ

the HEAD ( kephalē κεφαλῇ ) of WOMAN ( gynaikos γυναικός ) is [ THE ( ho ὁ ) ] MAN ( andros ἀνδρὸς ),

Comment: WOMAN ( gynaikos γυναικός ) - also translated as: WIFE

Comment: the use of the definite article: [ THE ( ho ὁ ) ] MAN - the word “THE” does not show in the English, although it is in the Greek text. It is there by necessity to teach that the HEAD of every WOMAN is NOT just *** ANY *** MAN, not even a congregation leader or ministry leader, but rather her OWN husband. This is taught throughout the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ), as well as in other passages in the ReNewed Covenant writings. ( see Eph 5:22; Col 3:18; 1 Pet 3:1; Titus 2:4 )

and the HEAD ( kephalē κεφαλῇ ) of [ THE ( tou τοῦ ) ] Messiah ( Mashiach מָשִׁיחַ ) is [ THE ( ho ὁ ) ] ELohim אֱלֹהִים

Comment: the use of the definite article: [ THE ( ho ὁ ) ] ELohim אֱלֹהִים – the word “the” does not show in the English, although it is in the Greek text. It is there by necessity to teach that the Head of Messiah is NOT just *** ANY *** ELohim אֱלֹהִים – “mighty one”, but rather, the One, True Living ELohim אֱלֹהִים of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Comment: the word HEAD ( kephalē κεφαλῇ ) used here does NOT mean “physical head”. It means: SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY and SPIRITUAL COVERING. This is what is taught throughout the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ), where HUSBANDS are instructed and commanded to teach their OWN wives and their OWN children, the COMMANDMENTS of the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ), and the WAYS of ELohim אֱלֹהִים , as well as in those other passages in the ReNewed Covenant writings. ( Eph 5:22; Col 3:18; 1 Pet 3:1; Titus 2:4 )

Sha’ul then explains that this is exactly what he is talking about here, by what he says in Verse 10:

For this reason THE ( hē ἡ ) WOMAN ( gynē γυνὴ )

Comment: WOMAN ( gynē γυνὴ ) - also translated as: WIFE

ought TO HAVE ( echein ἔχειν )

{ a symbol of }

Comment: { a symbol of } – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators;

AUTHORITY ( exousian ἐξουσίαν )
on ( epi ἐπὶ )
{ her } [ THE ( tēs τῆς ) ]
HEAD ( kephalēs κεφαλῆς ),
because of the angels. ( 1 Cor 11:10 )

Comment: What is Sha’ul teaching here? A woman ( wife ) should have SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY over head, COVERING HER. The “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) teaches that this is for the PHYSICAL and SPIRITUAL SAFETY, PROTECTION and WELL-BEING of the WOMAN / WIFE.

Therefore, the “COVERING” that Sha’ul is talking about here, on the HEAD of a MAN or a WOMAN, is NOT a garment or article of clothing, but SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY and SPIRITUAL COVERING.
4 Every ( pas πᾶς ) MAN ( anēr ἀνὴρ ; an'-ayr )

Comment: MAN ( anēr ἀνὴρ ; an'-ayr ) - also translated as: HUSBAND, generally implies a MALE, but sometimes translated even as: “PEOPLE”

praying ( proseuchomenos προσευχόμενος ) or prophesying ( pro
phēteuōn προφητεύων ),

{ ANYTHING }

Comment: { ANYTHING } – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators;

ON ( kata κατὰ )

Comment: ON ( kata κατὰ ) – this is a preposition, which can be translated as:
by, on, against, according to, for, in, at, with, before, through, throughout, etc.

having ( echōn ἔχων )

HIS HEAD ( kephalēs κεφαλῆς )

{ COVERED }

Comment: { COVERED } – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators;

dishonors ( kataischynei καταισχύνει ; puts to shame; disgraces )

his head

Comment: his head - [ the ( tēn τὴν ) head ( kephalēn κεφαλὴν ) of him ( autou αὐτοῦ ) ]

We know and ( must ) understand, that Sha’ul ( Saul – Paul ), did NOT, and could NOT, write anything that is contrary to what Moses and the Prophets taught, or that is contrary to Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ
the Messiah taught.

Sha’ul is not saying that a MAN / HUSBAND who prays with a PRAYER SHAWL / TALLIT טַלִּית on his head is allegedly dishonoring, disgracing, or shaming his SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY who is Messiah. If Sha’ul intended to write about a GARMENT or ARTICLE of CLOTHING used to physically cover one’s head, he would have made that very specific and very clear.

So what then is Sha’ul talking about here concerning a MAN / HUSBAND? Since he is talking about SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY and SPIRITUAL COVERING of a MAN / HUSBAND over his OWN WIFE or UnMarried FEMALE daughters, he is talking the same thing in regards to a MAN / HUSBAND and Messiah, who is the SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY and SPIRITUAL COVERING of that MAN / HUSBAND.

In other words, NO ONE is to have ABSOLUTE and COMPLETE SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY and SPIRITUAL COVERING over a MAN / HUSBAND, but Messiah Himself, not even a congregation leader or ministry leader.

I believe in authority and being under authority. Yet this must be according to the commandments, and the spiritual principles and spiritual truths contained within the commandments, of the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ).

-------

7 For a MAN ( anēr ἀνὴρ ; an'-ayr )

{ his }
[ THE ( tēn τὴν ) ]
HEAD ( kephalēn κεφαλὴν ),

since he is ( hyparchōn ὑπάρχων ; BEING )

{ the }
Comment: { the } – there is NO word here for this in the Greek text; it is inserted by translators;

image ( eikōn εἰκὼν )

Comment: teaching directly from the Creation, in the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ), MAN made in the IMAGE and LIKENESS ELohim אֱלֹהִים - Gen 1:26

Comment: the English word: “ICON” is derived from this Greek word meaning: IMAGE or LIKENESS.

and ( kai καὶ )
GLORY ( doxa όξα )

but ( de δὲ ; however )

WOMAN ( gynē γυνὴ )

Comment: WOMAN ( gynē γυνὴ ) - also translated as: WIFE

GLORY ( doxa όξα )

of MAN ( andros ἀνδρὸς ).

Comment: MAN ( andros ἀνδρὸς ) - also translated as: HUSBAND

-------

There is probably more to this, especially in regards to the culture of Greek and Roman society regarding head coverings ( garments / articles of clothing to cover the head ). In addition, there is most likely more to this in regards to the specific circumstances and conditions of life / life-style in the very worldly / very sexually immoral Greek city of Corinth, where this particular assembly was located.

 2. I have heard it said that Paul was a Tallit maker instead of a tent maker, what's your take on this? Is there evidence in the original language to suggest or support this? >
Yes, I agree that he was a maker of TALLITS, not a TENT-MAKER. When a man puts a TALLIT over his head, it looks like a TENT. A little Hebrew cultural understanding helps here.

 3. Was the sheet that Peter saw in his vision with the animals a Tallit? Is there evidence in the original language to support or suggest this? - Yes, absolutely. I have a teaching, in progress, from both Hebrew and Greek, that explains Acts 10 and 11.

4. When I see people using the Tallit to wrap around their families to pray, is this the same imagery as in the Psalms when scripture uses wings? - When a Tallit is long enough, and hangs down, it sort of forms "WINGS". When a man holds it up over himself, it also sort of forms "WINGS". The Hebrew word for WING and for "EDGE" / "CORNER" is the same: Kah-nahf.

5. And finally, would you mind referencing the verse where the Messiah talks about the Tallit Kattan? You had mentioned this in the original status and I wanted to check it out! - They wore an OUTER GARMENT - ROBE, and also an INNER / UNDER GARMENT - which was often the Tallit Kattan - Tallit Small > Small Tallit.

So what then would cause: dishonor, disgrace or shame to the HEAD - the SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY of a MAN -- who is Messiah?

It would include giving MORE AUTHORITY to another MAN ( or WOMAN ) than one is expected and required to give to His Creator: Yeshua
יֵשׁוּעַ the Messiah. That other MAN or WOMAN could include someone who is a congregation leader or ministry leader.

It would also include giving MORE AUTHORITY to a religious body of people, a religious group of people, a religious organization of people, or something like a church denomination, any and all of which, CAN and DO, require people to FOLLOW and OBEY their MAN-MADE rules, regulations, edicts and decrees, instead of teaching and encouraging us to FOLLOW and OBEY the COMMANDMENTS of the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) of our Creator: YHWH יְהוָה ELohim אֱלֹהִים .

When people choose or decide to FOLLOW and OBEY false, pagan churchianity customs and traditions, instead of LEARNING and OBEYING the COMMANDMENTS of the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) of ELohim אֱלֹהִים , they dishonor, disgrace or shame Messiah Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ .

When Messianic / Messianic Jewish / Hebrew Roots believers, choose to NOT OBEY a commandment and do what is right, according to the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ), but instead choose or decide to FOLLOW and OBEY what a congregation or ministry leader says or requires which is contrary to the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ), they dishonor, disgrace or shame Messiah Yeshua יֵשׁוּעַ .

This I believe is the INTENT of what Sha’ul is teaching here, since this is what the commandments, and the spiritual principles and spiritual truths contained within the commandments, of the “LAW” ( TORAH תּוֹרָה ) teach us.

Shalom
